Romero III's game winner lifts Wildcats to victory

SAN ANTONIO – Andrew Romero III's step-back 3-pointer in the corner with less than 1 second left capped a dramatic comeback victory by the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team on Friday night.

After trailing by 19 at halftime and by as much as 22 in the first half, Romero III's last-second contested 3 gave JWU Denver (13-5, 6-3) its first lead of the night at 67-66. The Tigers (2-14, 2-5) tried calling a timeout after the go-ahead bucket, but didn't have any left, resulting in a technical foul. Romero III (Northglenn, Colo.) knocked down both free throws for the final margin in the win, 69-66.

"It's a good feeling, but it wasn't just about me and that one shot," Romero III said. "Everyone contributed to the win, everyone played hard on defense."

The senior guard scored 21 of his game-high 25 points in the second half to help lead the Wildcats' second half surge. JWU trailed by 10 points with 2:16 remaining in the second half before ending the game on a 13-0 run to win its fourth in a row.

Romero III sparked the furious rally with one of his five made 3s at the 1:54 mark. Romero III scored 10 of the game's final 13 points, a run that also included a free throw by Kelsey Williams and jumper by Jontrell Herman.

"This is a big win for us," Romero III said. "We really wanted to start off this road trip strong and keep this win streak going."
