SHREVEPORT, LA. – A jumper by Treylan Matthews with 3 seconds remaining lifted Centenary College to a 61-59 win over the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team on Saturday night.

With the game tied at 59 and 41 seconds left on the clock, JWU Denver got the defensive stop it needed, but the Wildcats allowed an offensive rebound to Ty Prince, giving the Gents another chance and leading to Matthews' game winner.

Andrew Romero III got off a 3-pointer before to the buzzer at the other end, but it was no good as the Wildcats saw their four-game win streak come to an end. JWU fell to 17-7 overall and 10-5 in the SCAC, now two games back in the loss column behind first place Texas Lutheran.

With 4:48 left in the first half, Romero III went 2-for-2 at the free throw line to reach 2,000 career points. The senior from Northglenn, Colo. is already the program's all-time leader in points scored (2,016) and rebounds (586).

Romero III finished with a team-leading 23 points and four assists for the Wildcats, who were held to less than 60 points for the first time this season. Jontrell Herman finished with 13 points and five rebounds while Bailey Stephens totaled 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Matthews paced the Gents (12-11, 9-5) with 19 points.

JWU was in control for the entire first half and led by six at halftime (29-23), then extended the lead to 12 with 12:14 to play on a layup by Taka Hall. The Gents chipped away at the deficit down the stretch as the Wildcats went cold offensively.

Matthews tied the game with a 3 at the 1:43 mark, then gave the hosts their first and only lead of the SCAC contest with his second-chance, game-winning jumper.

The Wildcats wrap up the 2018-19 season on Saturday, Feb. 16 (3 p.m., Wildcat Center). All former JWU basketball players are encouraged to attend the game against in-state rival Colorado College as part of the Senior Day festivities.
