Wildcats' fast start not enough

DENVER – Back home for the first time in three weeks and in search of its third straight victory, the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team couldn't hold onto an early lead against visiting Texas Lutheran, dropping a 66-54 SCAC conference matchup on Friday at the Wildcat Center.

JWU Denver (2-16, 1-11) built a 15-14 lead after the opening quarter and was within one possession at the break, down 27-24. But the Bulldogs (13-7, 9-2) took control of the contest by outscoring the Wildcats 23-8 in the third frame.

Katey Guzman led all players with 17 points while fellow freshman Brianna Bailey added 15 for JWU. Avionne Gomez made it three Wildcats in double figures with 12 points. Bryanna Delgado and Morgan Rodriguez finished with 11 each for TLU, which had a 40-26 rebounding advantage.

The 12-point margin marked a significant improvement for JWU from the team's first matchup with TLU when the Bulldogs won by a score of 74-40.

"On defense we were really focused on keeping them under 15 points each quarter, which we did for two quarters," Bailey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) said. "It was a lot of improvement, and I'm excited for the rest of the season. We still have that confidence. We're coming into tomorrow with a good and confident mentality. It's a team effort."
