JWU Denver rally comes up short

DENVER – Southwestern's depth was too much to overcome for the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team as the host Wildcats fell to the visiting Pirates 60-46 on Saturday night at the Wildcat Center.

First-year guard Brianna Bailey led all players with 20 points and added six assists and five rebounds for JWU Denver (2-17, 1-12). Classmate Avionne Gomez finished with eight points and five boards while Ashley Mortensen chipped in seven points for the Wildcats.

Tori Carraway was the lone player in double figures with 13 points for the Pirates (8-12, 7-4), who outscored the Wildcats 28-7 in bench points.

JWU struggled offensively to start, scoring just two points through the first five minutes of the first quarter. But consecutive 3-pointers by Bailey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) got the Wildcats going. After trailing 32-21 at the break and 46-28 late in the third, JWU went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter to make it a 10-point game heading to the fourth.

The Wildcats closed the deficit to seven on a 3 by Mortensen (Thornton, Colo.) at the 6:31 mark of the final frame but couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
