Wildcats grab 6-0 win

Wildcats grab 6-0 win

JWU began their first year in NCAA Division III on a highnote with a 6-0 win over Mills College.

The 'Cats headed to Oakland, California for their season opener at Helman Field. Natasha Martin (Las Vegas, Nev.) looked to get things going early for Johnson & Wales with a shot in the fourth minute that went high. She got another attempt in the 8th minute but MC's Anais Uriarte made the save. Rebecca Brock (San Antonio, Texas) had a go two minutes later but Uriarte again made the save. Martin broke through in the 33rd minute, putting a ball past the keeper and giving JWU the 1-0 lead.

The second half saw the 'Cats pour on the offense with Katherine Owings (St. Louis, Mo.) notching the first of her collegiate career with an assist from Martin. Owings almost bagged a second goal before Uriarte made the stop. Brock added a third for JWU just after the save, forcing a turnover by the Cyclones and putting it past Uriarte to give JWU the 3-0 advantage in the 54th minute.

Maysen Whitney (Billings, Mont.) opened her collegiate account in the 57th minute, taking a pass from Molly Sharples (Henderson, Nev.) and putting it past the Cyclone's defense. Brock nabbed her second of the game in the 61st minute to extend the Wildcat's lead to 5-0. A penalty kick attempt by JWU in the 63rd minute was saved by Mills College's Mikaela Cuevas. Yesenia Hernandez (Denver, Colo.) got her first goal of the season in the 76th minute with a pass coming from Jenna Bonfardine (Culpepper, Va.) earning the assist.

Brock led JWU with two goals and had three shots on frame. Martin had a game high 4 shots on goal with one goal and one assist for Johnson & Wales.

The Wildcats will face UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at 10:30am PDT at Mills College.
