WHITTIER – A busy stretch that saw the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team play six games in eight days ended with a 74-72 loss at Whittier on Saturday night.
The Wildcats (8-2) trailed by double digits in the second half but rallied all the way back to tie the game at 72 on an Andrew Romero III free throw with 35 seconds to go. Whittier's Kenyatta Louder's jump shot at the other end on the ensuing possession with 6 seconds left proved to be the game winner.
Romero III and Jontrell Herman combined for 51 points for JWU Denver, which lost on the road for the first time this season. Herman (Duck Hiss, Miss.) led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-21 shooting to go with 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. The senior guard also led the Wildcats with four assists and four steals.
Louder and teammate Nick Potthoff scored 14 points each to pace the Poets (2-6), who won a rematch between two teams following a 99-87 JWU victory on Dec. 1.
After playing six games in eight days, including three road games the past three days, the Wildcats return home for an exhibition Tuesday at Northern Colorado before getting back to SCAC conference play Friday at Texas Lutheran and Saturday at Southwestern.
