The Wildcats continued their homestand on Friday afternoon when they hosted Southwestern University at Aurora Sports Park.
Johnson & Wales got on the board in the third minute as Kyler Fowkes (Arvada, Colo.) sent a pass up the left side to Emad Bashir-Mohammed (Darfur, Sudan) who crossed it in from 8 yards out giving JWU the 1-0 lead. The Pirates sent their first attempt of the game wide of goal in the 5th minute as they looked to even the score. Trey Furnas (Memphis, Tenn.) made the save in the 34th minute to keep the Pirates off the board. Furnas had another save in the 42nd minute as the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Southwestern sent their first attempt of the second half wide of frame as they continued to look for the equalizer. Furnas made the save on an attempt in the 52nd minute to maintain the clean sheet. Lemi Abera (Arjo, Ethiopia) had his attempt in the 69th minute saved by SU's Alan Carr as the Wildcats looked to double their lead. The visitors broke through the Wildcat's defense in the 86th minute as Dejan Savic took a pass from Andrew Hernandez and crossed it to the bottom right corner.
Mohammed almost doubled this tally after the restart but Southwestern's Carr made the stop. With a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes the game went into the first of two overtime periods. The first overtime period didn't have a lot of offense on either side, forcing the match into a second overtime period.
Furnas had two big saves for Johnson & Wales in the second overtime period to keep the clock ticking and preserving the potential draw. After 110 minutes, neither team had found the back of the net for a second time as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Mohammed had two shots on goal for JWU and Furnas finished with six saves.
Johnson & Wales will close out the homestand on Sunday afternoon when they host Texas Lutheran University at 12:00pm at Aurora Sports Park.
