DENVER -- A solid start and a late rally came up just short for the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team on Saturday at the Wildcat Center.
Freshman guard Katey Guzman went off for a career-high 30 points and teammate Brianna Bailey poured in 24, but the combined 54 points by JWU Denver's permitter duo wasn't enough as visiting Centenary had five players in double figures in an 80-73 SCAC conference victory.
The Wildcats played one of their best opening quarters of the season, taking a five-point lead multiple times in the first frame before eventually facing a 37-27 deficit at the break.
The visiting Ladies (4-10, 2-4) built a nine-point advantage on several occasions in the second half, but the Wildcats never quit. Midway through the fourth quarter Bailey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) knocked down one of her five 3-pointers in the game to cut the deficit to 66-64. However, JWU was unable to get any closer, falling to 0-12 overall and 0-7 in league play.
Along with the career scoring effort, Guzman (Fort Collins, Colo.) dished out a personal-best seven assists. Bailey added seven rebounds, a team-high matched by Shaylee Andreatta, while Ashley Mortensen totaled a career-high four steals to go with five points, a scoring total matched by Salma Oros and Mortensen.
