DENVER - The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team finished ninth in the SCAC preseason coaches' poll, released Tuesday by the conference.
Defending league champion Trinity University received five of 10 first-place votes and 77 points to be tabbed the favorite. The Tigers, who are aiming for their fourth title in five years, are followed in the poll by Texas Lutheran, Austin College, Southwestern University, Colorado College, Schreiner University, Centenary College and the University of St. Thomas. The University of Dallas finished behind JWU Denver in 10th place.
Trinity returns all five starters from last season's team that went 22-5 and went to an SCAC-record seventh straight conference tournament title game.
Under the direction of fourth-year head Bob Kintzel, the Wildcats return their top three leading scorers from 2018-19 -- who are all back as sophomores: Katey Guzman, Brianna Bailey and Avionne Gomez.
JWU opens the season Sunday, Nov. 10 against Whitworth. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at the Wildcat Center.
