Women's basketball drops SCAC matchup to UST

DENVER – The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team fell to the University of St. Thomas 84-48 in an SCAC matchup Friday night at the Wildcat Center.

The Wildcats were within a possession after the first quarter, trailing 16-13, but the visiting Celts outscored the hosts 30-10 in the second frame to take control.           

Sophomore Brianna Bailey paced JWU Denver (2-13, 2-8) with 15 points and five rebounds. Classmate Katey Guzman finished with 12 points and four boards while fellow sophomore Avionne Gomez made it three Wildcats in double figures with 10.

Freshman Abigail Pare grabbed a career-high nine rebounds while freshman Sariah Serrano returned from an injury with a career-best eight points.

Sheridan Hopkins led UST (13-4, 8-2) with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting. The Celts made 13 3-pointers, including five by Hayden Morin.

JWU returns to the Wildcat Center on Saturday to host Centenary College at 6 p.m.
