The Wildcats welcomed the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mountain Lions had the first attempt of the game just over two minutes into the contest but Madison Herbert (Berthoud, Colo.) made the stop on the first shot she saw. Madison Ellis put the Mountain Lions up 1-0 at 25:36. Herbert was seeing the ball well in the opening half as she made three more saves in the opening eight minutes. The 'Cats trailed 4-0 midway through the first half of the game. UCCS found some rhythm around the 10 minute mark and pushed their lead up to 9-0 at 9:20. Kyra Gangemi (Elkton, Md.) got the Wildcats on the board at 8:43 after the 'Cats successfully cleared the ball from their end of the field.
At the break, the Mountain Lions led 11-1.
In the second half, the Mountain Lions worked the clock trying to keep the 'Cats off the offensive side of the ball. Caroline Ellis (Maplewood, N.J.) got her first goal of the season for Johnson & Wales, scoring at 20:28. Herbert continued to make the stops, stalling the late run the Mountain Lions tried to make. UCCS held off the JWU offense as the 'Cats fell 2-15.
Gangemi led Johnson & Wales with two shots on goal and four ground balls. She had four draw controls for JWU as well. Herbert made 18 saves for the Wildcats and had one ground ball.
The Wildcats will take on Metro State University's club team on Monday, March 20 at 5pm in an exhibition contest.
