Johnson & Wales swept their first weekend of conference play with a 1-0 win over Austin College on Sunday afternoon.
The opening minutes of the game featured both teams looking to find a groove as the clock ticked away. In the 17th minute, Jenna Bonfardine (Culpepper, Va.) put a shot on frame in the 17th minute, forcing Austin College's Meredith Harris to make the save. Katelyn Peters (Brighton, Colo.) made the stop in the 27th minute off an attempt by Madeline Klem. The 'Cats continued to look for the breakthrough goal but saw their attempts off target as the first half progressed. Peters had another save before the break to keep the game scoreless going into the break.
The two teams came out of halftime looking to get an early start but each side couldn't find the first goal. In the 66th minute, Bonfardine passed a ball through to Natasha Martin (Las Vegas, Nev.) who went up against Austin's Harris and beat her in the one on one battle with a shot to the lower right. Another attempt by Martin in the 71st minute was blocked and Rebecca Brock (Amarillo, Texas) forced a save in the 76th as the 'Cats looked to build on their lead.
Bonfardine tried to add a second for the 'Cats late in the game but AC's Harris again came up with the save.
Bonfardine had a game high two shots on goal and Martin finished with five shots. Peters made three saves for Johnson & Wales in the win.
The Wildcats will open their home schedule on Friday, September 14 at 2:00pm when they take on Southwestern University at Aurora Sports Park.
