Johnson & Wales opened their home schedule on Friday afternoon, hosting Southwestern University at Aurora Sports Park.
The visitors looked to get on the board early in the fifth minute with Samiah Varnell putting a shot on frame that forced Katelyn Peters (Brighton, Colo.) to make the stop on. In the 10th minute, Hallie Rutherford put the Pirates up 1-0 off a corner kick. Rutherford almost doubled the lead for the Pirates in the 14th minute but Peters made the stop to keep it a one goal game. Peters had another save a couple minutes later as the visitors continued to pressure Johnson & Wales. In the 32nd minute, Maysen Whitney (Billings, Mont.) forced SU's Mary Cardone make the save on her attempt.
Southwestern University took the 1-0 lead into the break.
The Wildcats pressured the Pirates in the 49th and 54th minute with Katherine Owings (St. Louis, Mo.) and Asianna Harris (Las Vegas, Nev.) putting their attempts on frame but SU's Cardone made both stops to keep the Wildcats off the board. Johnson & Wales weren't able to find the late goal as they fell 1-0 and dropped their first home match of the season.
Peters had three saves for Johnson & Wales and the Wildcats put up six shots in the contest.
Johnson & Wales will host Texas Lutheran University on Sunday at 2:00pm at Aurora Sports Park to wrap up the weekend.
